Tell Your Story

The Google dictionary de2016-05-31_05-30-38(1)fines “story” as

1) an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment or,

2) an account of past events in someone’s life or in the evolution of something.

I love the explanation of number two: the evolution of something.  Isn’t that what the story of our lives is, the evolution of something.  We are not who we used to be and we are not who we are going to be either.  Each and every day we change.  Things, events, and people impact us either negatively or positively all the time.  It is all of these things that make us individual and unique.

I have been told by many people that I’m weird.  That’s fine with me.  I was talking with my Pastor’s wife and I told her that people have told me that I’m weird.  I love her reply back to me.  She said, “We are all weird.  That’s what makes us unique.  The people that think they are not weird are only lying to themselves.”  Her answer was so awesome.  The more I thought about it, the more I realized that we are supposed to be different and unique.

When God made each of us, he made us unique and different from anyone else.  We shouldn’t fit into a box that others have designed to keep us in.  We need to design our own box.  When my daughter was young, there was a boy at her school that wanted to wear his shirt backward.  I overheard another parent asking his mother how she could allow him to come to school like that.  Her response to him was, “I choose my battles wisely.  He isn’t hurting anyone by wearing his shirt backward.  He wants to display his individualness.  That’s fine with me, there are way too many other things to worry about.”  The questioning parent was speechless.  I loved it.  Untitled design (5)

Only you can tell your story.  If we give in to the pressures of everyone else, to fit into a box that was not made for us, we will only be hurting ourselves.  What kind of story is your life trying to tell?  If we are not ourselves, then it is a work of fiction.

I read a wonderful post by Temitope Durotoye.  In his post he said:

“Have you ever wished to be like someone else? Well, no matter how much you try to be like someone, you can only be your own version of that person. So why waste so much time trying to be someone else when you can be the best you you can be.” 

Don’t waste your time trying to meet the expectations of others.  Your life is a story that only you can tell.  No matter how strange that story is, tell it the best way that you can. Along the way, there might be some that don’t appreciate your story.  Move on, they aren’t worth wasting your time.  I’m slowly learning this lesson myself.

What Will be Remembered?

It’s 2018 already! The year came so fast. Thinking back on 2017, what would you have done differently? Do you feel that you made the impact that you wanted to? The good thing is it’s a new year and we have 365 more chances.
Marguerite Annie Johnson Angelou was born on April 4, 1928, and passed away on May 28, 2014. She is better known as Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou was a very influential writer for her time, and she still is today. One of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou is:

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelout

Those words are so true.  As a teacher, I would love to think that my words would have an important impact on each student.  Sadly, the truth is that most of my words are forgotten as soon as I speak them.  My pastor always says that he has to repeat something at least 5 times, so everyone hears him.

I just recently watched an interesting movie starring Ryan Reynolds.    The movie was called “School of Life.”  I know what you’re thinking, that movie came out in 2005 and you just recently watched it?  In the movie, Ryan Reynolds plays a teacher named Mr. D.  All the students love him.  Not because he was the best teacher in the world, or because they listened to every word he spoke.  No, it was because he took the time to make each student feel important.

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer understood the importance of impacting others.  He was known as the “father of motivation.”  How great would it be if each and every day we could make people feel better about themselves?

I know all too well how it feels when unkind words are spoken, even in fun or just repeating something that someone else said.  Once those words are spoken, they can never be taken back.  That is why it is so important to think about how your words will make someone feel before you say them.

With this being the new year and most people are in the mindset of setting goals, how about setting a goal of purposely being nice.  Smile at people, open the door for someone, say a kind word.  You never know how just one simple little act can make someone’s day.

Choose Kind

One of my favorite quotes is by Dr. Wayne Dyer. The quote is “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind. — Dr. Wayne W. Dyer” Dr. Dyer was known as the “Father of Motivation.” Recently I saw the movie Wonder, where this quote was used as a precept for a Jr High class. This is such a powerful saying; “choose kind.” Being kind is a choice. It is not always the easy choice. However, it is the right choice.

I teach a Jr High class where this seems to be an issue on a daily basis. There are times when their personalities clash with other classmates and their words are not always kind. I constantly remind them of this quote. I tell them that for the rest of their lives they will be in situations where personalities will clash, with neighbors, or with co-workers. Remember that in the end, everyone will be remembered for something. Most of the time people will not be remembered for being right all the time, but people will be remembered for being kind. It would be great to have it said about you, “I remember them. They were always kind to me.”

This is an important concept to keep in mind during the holiday season and all year long. At holiday time people are usually at their best. Giving is up and holiday cheer is spread. In general, most people are happier and nicer around this time of year. What about after? What about the rest of the year?

Dr. Dyer also said, “How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.” Although I do not believe in karma, I do agree that you have a choice in the way you react to people and situations.

If you are one of those people that are worried that giving someone too many compliments will give them a big head; I’m guilty of this myself. Don’t worry, there will always be plenty of others not choosing to be kind.

Make the choice to be kind and you will always be right.

Blackout Poetry

There are so many different types of poetry that it’s a good idea to try and learn as many as possible. 

I’m going to start teaching about poetry next month and I have been researching a lot of different poems. One of my favorite types is called “Found Poetry.” Basically, found poetry is anything that is found on something that is already printed. Maybe a newspaper, a flyer, a book, ect.  

Within the Found Poetry genre, there is a type of poetry called Blackout Poetry. It’s where you find words on a page that might fit to make up a poem. You square those words and blackout the rest of the page. If you want to get really creative, you can make a cool design.

3 Things to Think About “Life”

life-2017-movie-poster-480x711 The movie Life just came out in theaters this weekend.  What a great title for this movie.  Life!  The possibilities are endless with a name like that.  In fact, the movie is about seven lives, all at different places emotionally, different reasons for being there, and they all have to work together.  In the film, the astronauts are trying to prove there is “life” on Mars, and end up trying to saves the lives of billions of people.  If you have already seen it or if you are planning on seeing it, here are some things to think about.

1.  Special Effects

One thing that is excellent about the movie is the special effects.  If you are going to see the movie because of the special effects, then you’re in luck.  They really did a great job. From the images of space, the explosions, and our new friend from Mars, “Calvin,” the effects and CGI were one of the best things about the film.  I will have to say that I wasn’t expecting much as far as the way the creature looked.  In the previews, they do not show very much of the alien.  I don’t want to give anything away for those that have not seen the movie yet.  I’m sure they didn’t want to give away too much in the trailer.  All I will say is from the way Calvin looks in the previews, you’ll be in for a surprise.

2.  Story-line

The whole premise of the film was great.  Discovering life on Mars.  After all, everyone is talking about Mars right now.  Scientists are trying to find ways to send people to Mars right now while you’re reading this post. The film was inspired by the movie Alien (1979).  Sadly, I think it didn’t reach it’s mark.  It was very predictable and had some holes in the continuity of the story structure.  There were some surprises and some twists which kind of make up for the fact that you knew how the movie was going to end.

3.  Character Development

This is the one point of the movie I think really fell short.  In order for us, as viewers, to care about these characters on the screen there needs to be some kind of back story, or some kind of character development so we can connect with them in some way.  They did a good job with two of the characters, Sho Murakami (Hiroyuki Sanada) and  David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal).  The only thing that we really find out about Rory Adams (Ryan Reynolds) is that he has a dog.  I was worried that he wouldn’t make it home and his dog would be alone.   Overall, it seemed a bit in parts.  It might have helped if they took some time to let us get to know the characters so we would care if they get killed by an alien life-form.
